Unfold for Performing Artists

Performance is a delicate task. While the audience may be transported by force of imagination, performers have to stay present and fully connected to the physical reality of their actions, rely on their embodied skills and mastery every step of the way. Unfold practice improves this body-mind connectivity, the simultaneous perception of oneself, the space and others, enabling continuous integration of the artist into the performance. Similar to the tuning of an instrument before it is played, Unfold tunes the artist to perform with more balance, focus and energy. Technical execution and artistic interpretation become richer and more precise. Unfold approaches movement without aesthetic preference and opens up a safe space for experimentation where undesirable professional habits start to fade away. Supportive improvisation tools help liberate the body and open it up for new inspiration. Unfold also helps ensure sustainability of creative experience for a long artistic career through healthy body and mind attitudes. Proper distribution of weight and tone help joints and other vulnerable tissue actually last longer. Unfold enables improved posture, more efficient and easier breathing and voice use, greater economy of movement, and is very effective in preventing injury. It provides the skills the artist requires to contain extreme emotional and physical experiences without breaking and in full awareness. The body as such is no longer an artistic product but a medium allowing poetry to emerge.

This practice helps me recognise very clearly the connection between the habits of the body and the habits of expression as an artist, and to free myself from many of them.
